Following the renovation of a Grade II listed country home, the owners added a contemporary “cube” conservatory. In contrast to the main house which dates back to the early 19th Century, the ultra-modern room has three sides and its roof made from glass.
The shading challenge was to control heat and glare whilst complementing the design of both the room and the designer white interior of the adjoining country house.
Working with their approved distributor, Grants Blinds, SHY specified six Obscura FTS roofblinds designed to sit between the roof’s glass fins. Each blind, measuring 1500mm x 4300mm, was made from SHY Solarscene S110 1% glass-fibre sun screen fabric to take advantage of its 67% solar reflectance to reduce glare and control heat gain.
SHY’s fabric tension system (FTS) ensures that the blinds operate without sagging or rippling. This system has a motor at both ends of the blind so when they are stopped at any point, the motors turn gently in the opposite direction to tension the cloth. The motorised blinds are linked to the home’s automation system, so they can be programmed to open and close to suit the home owner’s comfort and use of the conservatory at different times of the day. Additional radio controls were also provided for maximum flexibility.
The colour of the Solarscene fabric was SHY’s “house white” and chosen because it complemented the white, contemporary interior of the newly-renovated country manor. The minimalist design of the cube meant the blinds needed to be as unobtrusive and as hidden as possible. Colour-matched header boxes conceal the motors and retracted blinds on the glass-walled side whilst on the opposite side, the workings are sensitively hidden within the adjoining, historic external wall.
