When building this kitchen extension, the homeowners wanted to make the most of their garden view by installing bi-fold doors. They also wanted to avoid heat build-up so they could maximise the use of this room throughout the day, all year round.
External, SHY ZIP® roller blinds were chosen as they are an effective way of keeping buildings cool (thereby saving on energy bills) by blocking solar radiation from hitting the glazing. They are powered by radio remote controlled motors, so they can be operated from the inside and adjusted to suit the light conditions.
The ZIP® channels keep the blinds in place whatever the weather elements outside and also allow the blinds to be in use even when the inward facing doors are open.
As the view of their garden was important to them, an external grade grey fibre screen fabric was used to connect them with the outdoors as this allows the human brain to ‘ignore’ the blind and still see the view beyond.
The blinds measured 4.4m and 2.7m with a 2.4m drop and both the heavy duty hem bars, head boxes and side channels were powder-coated to match the RAL colour their bifold doors. Other parts – including the screws - were also made from galvanised or stainless steel to ensure their suitability for long-term, outdoor use.
