Ocean Liner Angled Blinds

Being able to manage light filtration whilst retaining sea views was at the heart of the shading decisions for this stunning ocean liner’s angled windows across different sections of the boat.

Borealis is a luxury cruise liner taking passengers to destinations across the globe. Differing light levels and reflections off the water meant that it needed a flexible shading solution to manage light filtration whilst giving passengers the 360degree views expected.

Across the ship there are 48 angled windows for which they wanted a shading solution where the mechanisms would be concealed behind pelmets. SHY designed and manufactured motorised Obscura® CTS blinds, each measuring 1.3m wide x 3m long and these were expertly installed by Aquarius Interiors.

Using similar mechanisms to rooflight blinds, the constant tensioning system ensures the blinds keep taught for smooth operation when fitted on angled windows, eliminating fabric rippling and minimising maintenance. Ideal for shading smaller glazed areas, CTS uses a single motor system, located inside the cloth tube, with a spring box at the other end that pulls the fabric under tension.

A 10% Mermet fabric was chosen to complement the décor and give a level of see-through for passengers so they can appreciate the view when standing next to the windows, whatever the light levels. They are operated via remote wall switches to allow the crew easy and flexible operation.
